Jessica Hong: Finding Balance and Growth at ComputerTalk
by Jessica Hong | Published On July 22, 2025

Before joining ComputerTalk, I worked at big tech companies — a great experience that taught me a lot and connected me with amazing people I still keep in touch with.
Over time, I found that the highly structured environments, with their layers of processes and approvals, made it harder to stay hands-on and maintain a good work-life balance. I started looking for a role where I could focus more on the work itself and less on the red tape. I didn’t have a solid plan. I just knew I needed a change, and that’s how I ended up at ComputerTalk.
Finding my fit in a flexible culture
It felt different at first, and I wasn’t sure I fit in. But over time, I came to appreciate the leaner structure and the culture here. One of the things that works well for me here is how meetings are kept in check. I get long, uninterrupted blocks of time to actually focus. As a developer who enjoys being hands-on and solving problems, that makes a big difference.
In bigger companies, especially as you get more senior, it’s easy to get pulled into endless meetings even if you’re not a manager. I’ve never been someone who thrives in back-to-back meetings. I enjoy chatting here and there, but I’d much rather be building than talking all day. Some people here love the exact opposite, which is great too. At ComputerTalk, you can find what fits your style best.
What also makes this place feel right for me is the support from my teammates. When I went on maternity leave, they seemed genuinely happy for me. Maybe they were a little worried about how things would go without me (haha), but overall, the environment here felt really supportive. When I got back, I felt totally overwhelmed, like I’d forgotten everything. I guess my brain was still stuck in full-on baby-care mode. But there was no pressure. Everyone was patient and helped me ease back in.
That kind of support means a lot to me. Life happens, and at ComputerTalk, you don’t have to pretend otherwise. Whether you’re having a baby, dealing with an unexpected crisis, or just need a breather, people get it.
Seven years and counting
Looking back, I didn’t expect to stay here for seven years, but here I am and counting. The work is challenging in all the right ways, the people are supportive, and I’ve been able to grow without burning out.
